Sustainability of Open Defecation Free Cities in Uttar Pradesh

It is challenging to provide sustainable sanitation services to the people in India. The difficulties that the urban sanitation sector encounters are primarily related to the low priority that municipal governments have given it. Sanitation is the utilization of facilities and services for excreta and wastewater that respect individual privacy and dignity while guaranteeing a clean and healthy living environment for everybody. The collection, transportation, treatment, and disposal of domestic wastewater, solid waste, and related hygiene promotion should all be included in the facilities and services. As a result, the concept of sanitation has expanded to encompass wastewater treatment, excreta disposal, safe water, garbage disposal, and personal hygiene.  Swachchata Sarvekshan and protocols like ODF, ODF+, and ODF++ were launched by the Indian government to guarantee the long-term viability of inclusive sanitation infrastructure and its efficient utilization.  In light of this, the present book examines the status of urban sanitation and its sustainability in the selected cities of Uttar Pradesh. The book highlights status of urban sanitation, faecal sludge, septage and waste water management in the state. It is expected that the volume will be helpful in understanding the status of urban sanitation , challenges in its sustainability and  evolving roadmap for addressing the issues of   sustainable city wide and inclusive sanitation .
