Irrigation is essential for assured agricultural yield. About 70% of the cultivated area in the country lies in the regions of medium to low rainfall and bulk of the precipitation occur during the monsoon months. Since independence, the Government of India has spent huge amount of funds on major, medium as well as minor irrigation projects. As a result, the country’s irrigation potential has increased by about 102.08 million hectares by the end of Tenth Five Year Plan. With which; India has a largest irrigated area among all the country in the world. This has greatly contributed to increase in food-grain production by about 232 241M.T. in 2010-11 and further it increased 246 M. T. in 2011-12. India has fixed the total food grain output target for 2012-13 at 255 million tons.

The present book contains an analytical study of Irrigation Project and Agricultural Diversification in Kolhapur district of Maharashtra.
