War of Independence

The War of Independence in India, also known as the First War of Independence or the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, marked a pivotal moment in the country's history. It was a significant  prising against British colonial rule that began on May 10, 1857, in the town of Meerut and quickly spread across northern and central India. The immediate cause of the rebellion was the introduction of the Enfield rifle, which required soldiers to bite cartridges believed to be greased with animal fat. This practice offended both Hindu and Muslim soldiers, igniting widespread discontent within the ranks of the British East India Company's army.
