Kurnool district has a hoary past. It is full of rich historical antiquities. The pre-historic settlements are found at Belum, Billasargam. Kethavaram. Lanjabanda etc.. The impregnable forts like Kurnool. Adoni, Krishnagiri. Racherla, mango-shaped Banaganapalle fort etc. deserve a special mention. The famous pilgrim centres at Srisailam, Mantralayam, Mahanandi, Ahobilam. Nandavaram. Yaganti etc. attract lakhs of devotees. The mausoleums of Muslim saints or fakirs and ancient churches are another added attraction. Asoka's minor rock edicts at Erragudi, Rajulamandagiri and Suvarnagiri (Jonnagiri) clearly established the rule of the Mauryan Empire. Kurnool was the capital of Andhra State from 1.10.1953 to 31.10.1956. Even before the implementation of the historic Sri Bagh Pact of 1937. the capital was shifted from Kurnool to Hyderabad. Mahatma Gandhi visited the district in 1921 and 1929 during the freedom struggle and was pained to see the drought conditions here. There are many inscriptions. coins. copper-plate grants. local records. oral traditions etc. which are not deciphered and utilised by the historians so far. The historical importance and backwardness of the area are highlighted in the book "HISTORY OF KURNOOL : A CHALLENGE TOA.P. HISTORIANS".
