The New Economic Reforms (NERs) introduced on June 24, 1991 and India agreed as one of the signatories to accept and adopt globalization policy at the global level have provided the necessary impetus, especially, for the development of women by providing access to knowledge and skill-development enabling them to enter into job market and earn income on par with men in most of the modern sectors, say, software, education and medical fields etc., but all the benefits were enjoyed by only the urban elite women population in India. That is to say, the fruits of the NERs have not been percolated down to the rural areas where more than 70 percent of the women have been living with the barest means sans empowering themselves. The present study has made a deliberate attempt to focus on the socio-economic conditions of such women who live in the most backward and highly drought prone district of Anantapuramu in Andhra Pradesh.
