The road to inclusive development of women travels via making opportunities possible and available. Education, empowerment and then inclusion are the most likely steps on this journey. Education is perceived as the tool which allows one to attain certain life skills; skills which become instrumental in achieving financial independence eventually leading to political and social empowerment. Inclusion is the culmination of this chain, wherein women are recognized on an equal footing. The whole journey of education, empowerment and inclusion of women is captured in the present book. Women are coming out of the shadows of their lesser selves and learning to be their own masters. Shadows are also a metaphor for darkness of ignorance, confining cultural practices or restrictive social structures. One can see women in India, coming out of the shadows of the past and finding their own voice. All beginnings are small but as time goes by the trickle becomes flood. In 1921 the female literacy was merely one percent and in rural places it was less than that, now after 90 years, post several policy measures, India is rather close to achieving 100% female literacy, though that day is not exactly round the corner but also not far away in the distant future. The present book tries to capture the highpoints as well as inherent pitfalls. The entire journey from pre independence India till post 1990s and the impacts of Globalization is traced and analysed with data sheets and policy statements as also various initiatives implemented by the state, the Union governments and even private efforts are outlined. In all the book presents an insightful picture of women's education in India
