Rights to Information

The right to information (RTI), also known as freedom of information, has emerged as a fundamental element of credible democratic governance. It plays a crucial role in fostering 'open governance' and ensuring accountability among public decisionmakers. Furthermore, it strengthens transparency, civic participation, and the rule of law, which are essential for a healthy democracy.

Right to Information Act 2005 mandates timely response to citizen requests for government information. The concepts of right to information and good governance are intertwined. In a way they can be said to be two sides of the same coin, or two aspects of the same aspiration, viz., to strengthen, stabilize and broaden the working of the democratic system. A democracy functions best when the people are well informed and are free to participate in public issues and have access to the widest choice of information and solutions to problems and issues that affect them. A free press is the reflection of a free society.
