Values in Higher Education in India : Emerging Issues, Challenges & Way Forward

Higher education system is essential for national development. India has one of the largest higher education systems in the globe. It has also witnessed impressive growth over the last decades. With the liberalization of economy, there has been paradigm shift in terms of increasing role of private and corporate sector, greater emphasis on professional and technical education and increasing India's competitiveness in higher education system. There is need of value-based higher education system which empowers youth for self sustainability by inculcating employment skills and ethical values along with achieving creative and innovative specialized knowledge to address the emerging challenge unleashed by new business environment. 

Against this backdrop, a national Seminar on Values in Higher Education was organized for threadbare discussions and deliberations on pertinent issues and dimensions . The volume consisting of 24 well written papers presented in seminar. The volume has been divided into five parts viz. Higher Education in India: Perspective, Trends, Patterns and Issues; Academic Leadership, Quality and Values in Higher Education; Problems and Challenges in Higher Education; Impact of Privatization on Higher Education In India; and Strategies , Action Plan and Road Map for Higher Education . The volume highlights the status and situation of higher education in India; challenges in achieving the targets and objectives of higher education in India; academic leadership, qualities and values in higher education system in India; and impact of privatization and economic liberalization on higher education in India; and future action plan for fostering higher education in India. It is expected that the volume will be highly useful for policy makers, administrators, educationalists and development professionals in understanding the dynamics of higher education system, values, qualities and academic leadership in higher education and future strategies for fostering higher education.
